Open & Ask App

As part of a PCORI initiative comparing three approaches to improve communication between patients and their doctors, I helped design Open & Ask, a training app designed to help physicians improve physician-patient communication. It uses learning modules that simulate a real patient visit to help reduce hand-on-the-doorknob phenomenon and reduce after visit patient inquiries due to poor understanding of next steps or other issues. Each module tackles a specific skill and includes lessons, communication examples, and exercises that help practice and evaluate the new skills. The design decisions for the app were mainly based on design workshops with stakeholders and paper prototypes.
